From the news, who has shared a new listing on TechPowerUp showing a Gigabyte Aorus GeForce RTX 3080 Ti Xtreme GPU (GV-N308TAORUS X-20GD) that comes with 20GB of GDDR6X memory. The earlier reports of this 20GB version appeared back in December 2020. Comparing with the Aorus RTX 3080 Ti model which is currently available for sale in the market, the only real difference between the two cards is the VRAM and most other aspects such as the clock speeds for the memory is similar.

The 20GB model comes with a smaller memory interface. The CPU-Z packaging and screenshot show a 320-bit memory bus on the 20GB RTX 3080 Ti versus the 384-bit interface on the 12GB version. In other words, the higher memory version would have offered lower memory bandwidth.

However, it is still unknown what would be that considerable amount of VRAM was intended for, as the RTX 3080 had clearly less memory than the 3090, as it was primarily intended for gaming. Modern titles do not require such high VRAM, although certain professional applications would benefit from this increased memory. So it could have been the middle ground between the expensive RTX 3090 and the RTX 3080 which was good for both workloads.
